Let’s be real—some people treat you well, others… not so much. But how do you know when someone deserves your time, energy, or trust?
This blog gives you the tools to figure that out—based on something we call the Access: Respect and Responsibility Model. It’s all about making sure people earn their spot in your life by how they treat you.
So, What Are Healthy Boundaries?
Boundaries are like invisible fences that protect your space—emotionally, mentally, physically. They help you feel safe, respected, and in control of your life.
They’re not about being mean or pushing people away. They’re about being clear on what you need and what’s not okay.
🔑 The 3 Rs: Access, Respect, Responsibility
1. Access = How close someone is to you.
Do they get to know your secrets? Hang out with you a lot? Text you late at night? Borrow your stuff?
Access isn’t all-or-nothing. It’s a spectrum, and you get to decide who’s in your inner circle.
2. Respect = How they treat you.
Do they:
-
Listen without interrupting?
-
Accept “no” without guilt-tripping?
-
Own their mistakes?
-
Support your choices—even when they’re different from theirs?
Respect is earned, not automatic.
3. Responsibility = How they handle the access you give them.
Do they:
-
Keep private stuff private?
-
Check in with you emotionally?
-
Avoid pushing boundaries?
-
Make things better when they mess up?
This is about being trustworthy and handling the privilege of access with care.
⚠️ Mismatch = Red Flag Zone
A mismatch happens when someone has high access to your life (like a level 7) but only shows low respect or responsibility (like a level 3).
Think of it like giving someone your phone passcode—and then they go through your private messages or post without asking. Not okay.
This kind of mismatch feels draining, uncomfortable, or unsafe. And if you ignore it? You’re more likely to feel used, hurt, or disrespected.
Access Level: 7
Respect & Responsibility Level: 3
➡️ Mismatch! Time to reset boundaries.
💬 How to Fix a Mismatch
-
Check the vibe: How do you feel around them—safe, judged, drained, empowered?
-
Adjust access: You don’t owe someone full access if they haven’t earned it.
-
Communicate: “I need to take a step back.” “I’m not okay with that.”
-
Set limits: Less texting, shorter hangouts, not sharing personal stuff.
Boundaries can shift. People can earn back trust—but only if they step up.
🚨 Signs You Might Need Stronger Boundaries
-
You say “yes” to avoid conflict—even when you mean “no”
-
You feel anxious after seeing someone’s name pop up on your phone
-
You constantly feel drained after hanging out
-
You share more than you’re comfortable with just to keep the peace
Quick Tip: You’re Allowed to…
-
Change your mind
-
Take a break from people
-
Say “no” without a long explanation – no is a full sentence
💥 Bottom Line
Healthy relationships are built on equal parts access, respect, and responsibility. When those things are out of balance, you get to rebalance them.
Boundaries aren’t about pushing people away—they’re about protecting your peace, your energy, and your future.
So check the access. Notice the respect. Expect responsibility. And remember—you’re the gatekeeper of your life.
